Dojo Etiquette

There are two principled reasons for dojo etiquette. The first is Respect: for karate, your sensei, the dojo, and other karateka. The second reason is Safety: Demonstrating respect for karate means following dojo etiquette and other guidelines expressed...

Etiquette / Guideline

1.                  All karatekas must have a valid membership card in order to train. Please ensure that your membership is up to date.

2.                  Wear a clean near Gi. You may have the official emblem sewn onto your gi.

3.                  Ensure your fingernails and toenails are trimmed

4.                  Come to class prepared to train with spirit.

5.                  Be punctual. If you are late, do not interrupt the class. Wait in seiza position until the instructor permits you to join the class.

6.                  Remove shoes before entering the dojo floor and bow prior to entering or leaving the floor.

7.                  Remove earrings, watches, rings and other jewellery before training.

8.                  Do not wear headbands, wristbands, bandanas or other adornments in class. Women should wear a plain white T-Shirt or athletic top under their gi.

9.                  Do not smoke, chew gum, eat or drink in the dojo.

10.              Bow when the instructor enters the dojo.

11.              Instructors should be addressed as “Sensei” and seniors as “Sempai”.

12.              Pay attention during class and follow instructions. Do not talk, yawn, fidget or daydream. Never interrupt the instructor.

13.              Do not leave class without permission from the instructor.

14.              When instructed to sit, use either the seiza or crossed-legs positions. Do not lean against the walls.

15.              Demonstrate respect to other karatekas by bowing before and after any exercise.

16.              Be helpful and courteous to other students, but also concentrate on improving your own techniques.

17.              Do not swear or lose your temper in the dojo.

18.              Clean the dojo floor before and after classes.

19.              In case of emergency or persistent problem, inform the instructor.

20.              Karate training does not end when you leave the dojo. Always behave in accordance with its principles.

Actually Osu, formed from two characters. The first character osu literally means push or control, and the second shinobu means bear, endure or suffer.  Universally used for expressions such as please, thank you, I understand, sorry etc, and in Karate, every time a response is required.
